Colorado: Rocky Mountain NP – Cub Lake The Cub Lake trail is a 2.5 mile stroll along the western edge of Moraine Park, up through a beautiful grove of aspen, then culminating at a small, lily-covered lake below the towering peaks above Spruce Canyon.
Hawaii: Haleakala NP – Sliding Sands & Pele's Paint Pots No visit to the island of Maui is complete without a trip to watch a brilliant sunrise from the 10,004' summit of Haleakala. And once the sun has risen, you find yourself at the brink of a massive, colorful, otherworldly volcanic crater, ready to be explored.
Oregon: Columbia River Gorge – Eagle Creek to Twister Falls One of the easiest, yet longest, trails in the Columbia River Gorge, this 13.4 mile out-and-back on the Eagle Creek trail just keeps getting better the farther you go – culminating with a spiraling, multi-tiered waterfall within a deep volcanic gorge.
Oregon: Columbia River Gorge – Multnomah–Wahkeena Loop Get beyond the crowds on this 5.4-mile loop hike that visits 6 waterfalls - one of them "secret" - and tops out above 620' Multnomah Falls, the 2nd-highest year-round waterfall in the U.S.
Oregon: Columbia River Gorge – Larch Mountain Crater This secluded 7-mile loop offers a backdoor through shady woods and over several creeks - and avoids 2/3 of the elevation gain! - to get to this popular high spot with huge, 5-mountain views.
Oregon: Florence – Heceta Lighthouse & Hobbit Beach Start with a casual romp through lush rainforest and a beaver pond meadow, traverse a coastal headland to an historic lighthouse, then delve down through "Middle Earth" to a mystic beach on this 6-mile loop hike.
Oregon: John Day Fossil Beds NM – Blue Basin First hike the Overlook Trail for panoramic views of this otherworldly-colored canyon, then descend to the back of the canyon on the Island in Time trail for close-up views of sculpted volcanic rock and 20 million year-old fossils.
Oregon: Silver Falls SP – Trail of Ten Falls A waterfall-lovers and photographers nirvana, this 8.75-mile loop offers visitors spectacular views above, below, and behind cascades of all shapes and sizes, amid lush forests sprinkled with a variety of wildflowers.
Oregon: Strawberry Wilderness – Strawberry & Slide Lakes Get big mountain scenery without the big mountain effort on either of these out-and-back trails – 7 miles to visit two gorgeous alpine lakes, secluded campsites, and a 60' trailside waterfall; or 8.5 miles that skirt volcanic cliffs amid hillside meadows to a pair of small alpine lakes and secluded camp spots.
Washington: Alpine Lakes Wilderness – Enchantment Lakes Ask anyone in Washington and Oregon what the premiere hiking and backpacking destination is, and the response you'll likely get will be, "The Enchantments." A wonderland of brilliant pristine lakes and meadows, surrounded by glacier-carved granite peaks and spires, this is truly the Yosemite of the Northwest.
Washington: Columbia River Gorge – Coyote Wall This 8.25 mile loop on the sunny Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge gradually climbs through shaded stands of oak and ponderosa pine, dotted with small, wildflower-strewn meadows, then deposits you 1800’ above the river at the top of a basalt ridge with expansive views and carpets of balsamroot and lupine.
Washington: Columbia River Gorge – Dog Mountain Perhaps the most popular dayhike on the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge, the Dog Mountain trail catapults hikers nearly 3,000’ above the Columbia River, treating visitors to one of the most dazzling displays of spring and summer wildflowers in the Gorge, to a summit boasting views of Mts. Hood, Adams and St. Helens.
Washington: Gifford Pinchot NF - Siouxon Creek This 8-mile out-and-back makes an excellent early-season romp up a narrow river canyon, boasting three gorgeous waterfalls and deep green pools, plus an ample serving of primitive campsites to turn it into an easy overnight.
Washington: Mount St. Helens NVM – Ape Canyon This 12 mile out-and-back travels through time – from lush, old-growth forest sprinkled with alpine wildflowers, to the desolation of the 1980 eruption, and overlooks a canyon named for its infamous legends of Bigfoot.
Washington: Mount St. Helens NVM – Monitor Ridge to South Rim This trail is not for the faint of heart, or the weak of knees. This is a grueling scramble up a blocky lava ridge to a steep slope of loose sand and ash, all completely exposed to the elements. But the view from the top makes the struggle worth it!
Washington: Mt. Rainier – Glacier Basin–Burroughs Mtn. Loop 10.5 mile loop hike starting at White River campground. Hike stretches of the Glacier Basin, Burroughs Mountain, and Wonderland trails, gaining and losing 3,200' to return to White River. Stunning scenery!
Washington: North Cascades NP – Lake Ann, Heather & Maple Passes Easily one of my Top-10 favorite hikes, the 9-mile loop trail around Lake Ann in Washington's North Cascades is the equivalent of getting a five-star gourmet meal for the price of a cheeseburger, the crescendo will leave you utterly speechless, yet leave you wondering how you attained so much for so little effort. A must do!
Washington: Olympic NP – Sol Duc–High Divide Loop This 3-day, 25-mile loop offers some of the best scenery Olympic has to offer - high ridges, endless valleys, alpine meadows, countless lakes, and glorious views of glacier-capped Mt. Olympus. And in late summer, an abundance of mountain blueberries to snack on as you hike.
Washington: Warwick – Klickitat Rail Trail 11.5-mile out-and-back hike along Swale Creek, starting through rolling rangeland with views of Mt. Adams, then into colorful Swale Canyon on the roadbed of the old Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railroad.
Wyoming: Grand Teton NP – String Lake to Trapper Lake This effortless out-and-back offers unparalleled views of rocky canyons, and towering glacier-topped peaks, all from the shores of four gorgeous mountain lakes.
